Dika & Haokip Scores to Break Jinx Against Churchill Brothers.
It was a crucial game for Kolkata giants Kingfisher East Bengal & the sole team from Goa Churchill Brothers FC who badly needed to register their first point in the I-League 2016-2017. The match started in a very bleak way when Anwar Ali was subbed by not so convincing Gurwinder Singh in the very 3rd minute of the game due to an injury. The Goan outfit started well & dominated position for the first 10 minutes but as the game went on the Kolkata Giants went on to take the control. The first blood was drawn on 31st minute when Nikhil Pujari U22 lad made a darting run on the right flank & crossed that deflected off the left back fell straight into the path of the young right winger who then headed the ball again straight towards Haokip who didn't make any mistake & headed it straight into the far corner to make it 1-0 for the Kolkata Giants.
At this time East Bengal was tearing Churchill defense apart. With likes of Plaza & Wedson passing the Churchill, defence was taken back a bit, due to this spell East Bengal was awarded a corner at 45+1 mins. Dika stepped up & delivered a curling shot which the Churchill custodian didn't anticipate as the big Ugandan Bukenya jumped & blocked his sight.
The goal was initially awarded to Bukenya but the replay showed Dika displaying his class again for the team. The second half saw the Goan outfit making attacking movements but the big Ugandan defied them all, only for a moment when Gurwinder has passed the ball back that awkwardly fell into the path of Anthony Wolfe but Rehenesh showed why he is in the starting eleven ahead of Subhasis Chowdhury when he came out of the box to clear the ball.
Willis Plaza & Wedson did everything except scoring a goal. Wedson missed the easiest opportunity of the match when he missed a one to one with the goalkeeper at mercy he lobbed the ball wide of the target.
Churchill came on to hit the crossbar in the dying minutes of the game.
It was a debut for the Kyrgyzstan international who still looked tired & jet lagged but at dying, moments of the game he did gave Jackiechand an opportunity to make it 3-0, but Jackie was unable to go past the goalkeeper .
All in all, it was a scrappy performance might be due to the heat the players were not up to the mark, the Red & Gold brigade displayed good spells in the match but was unable to continue the same for the maximum length of the game.
With the next game against defending champions Bengaluru Football Club (BFC) on 22nd of Jan 2017, it might be a sign of worry for Trevor Morgan to mend his back with Anwar & Arnab nursing an injury. Let's hope for the best.
