Ballon d’Or 2023 – Lionel Messi wins eighth trophy

Lionel Messi and Aitana Bonmati have been named the 2023 Ballon d’Or winners on Monday (30 October) at a star-studded ceremony in Paris.

Messi won the award as the best football player of the season for a record-extending eighth time, after leading Argentina to their first World Cup title since 1986.

Erling Haaland finished second and Kylian Mbappé finished third.

Spain’s Bonmati won the women’s award for the first time after leading Spain to their maiden World Cup title. Sam Kerr of Australia was runner-up, while 19-year-old Salma Paralluelo from Spain and FC Barcelona took third place.

Kopa Trophy for the best male U-21 player was won by Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid, England), Yachine Trophy for the best male goalkeeper won by Emiliano Martínez (Aston Villa, Argentina), Gerd Müller Trophy for the highest-scoring male striker won by Erling Haaland (Manchester City, Norway), Sócrates Award to acknowledge humanitarian work won by Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid, Brazil) and Club of the Year was won by Manchester City and FC Barcelona Femení.
