Defending champion France defeated Poland 3-1 to reach the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha on Sunday.
Olivier Giroud scored the opening goal for Les Blue in 44′. Kylian Mbappe then scored a brace in 74′ and 90+1′.
For Poland, Robert Lewandowski scored a consolation goal in 90+9′ via penalty.
Kylian Mbappe overtook Cristiano Ronaldo and equalled Lionel Messi’s World Cup tally of nine goals with a brace. Now he also became the sole leader in the Golden Boot race with five goals. HE earlier tied for the top spot with Lionel Messi, Enner Valencia, Cody Gakpo, Marcus Rashford, Alvaro Morata and compatriot Olivier Giroud at three goals.
Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud became France’s record scorer on Sunday with 52 goals, eclipsing the mark he shared with Thierry Henry after striking against Poland at the World Cup.
France will face either England or Senegal in the quarterfinal on Friday.
