Eintracht Frankfurt defeated West Ham 2-1 in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League semifinals on Thursday at the London Stadium. They are a step away from reaching its first European competition final in more than 40 years. Earlier, the German team had knocked out Barcelona in the quarterfinals.
Both Eintracht Frankfurt and West Ham are bidding to reach what would be their biggest match in decades — Frankfurt’s last final came when it won the Europa League predecessor UEFA Cup in 1980, and West Ham’s last game of that stature was the 1976 Cup Winner’s Cup final.
For Frankfurt, Ansgar Knauff scored in 1’ and Daichi Kamada scored in 54’ while for West Ham Michaill Antonio scored in 21’.
In the other semifinals, RB Leipzig defeated Rangers 1-0 at Red Bull Arena. Angelino scored the all-important goal in 85’.
An all-German final in the second-tier European competition is a possibility.
The second leg semifinals will be played on Friday, May 06, at IST 12:30 am.
