England won a major women’s tournament for the first time with a 2-1 victory over Germany at Wembley on Sunday. Thus English football’s 56-year wait for a World Cup or Euro victory comes to an end.
Chloe Kelly (110′) scored the winning goal on a rebound in the second half of extra time after Germany failed to clear a corner. The game had finished 1-1 after 90 minutes. Ella Toone gave England the lead in 62′ while Lina Magull equalized for Germany in 79′.
The tournament-record crowd of more than 87,000 underlined the growth of women’s soccer in Europe since the last time England and Germany played for a continental title 13 years ago.
Germany finished runners up for first time. They had earlier won the tournament a record eight times.
