Former India footballer and renowned coach Subhash Bhowmick passed away in Kolkata on Saturday. He was 72.

He was the member of Indian team that won Bronze Medal at the 1960 Asian Games, he also represented India in the 1974 Asian Games. He scored a hat-trick against the Philippines in the Merdeka Cup in 1971 which India won 5-1.

During his playing days he represented both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. He was known as a powerful forward with good goal scoring abilities. He played for five seasons with Red & Gold Brigade, 1969–1970, 1973–1976 and 1978–1979. He was one of the key member of East Bengal team which had demolished Mohun Bagan A.C. 5-0 in the 1975 IFA Shield final.

Subhash Bhowmick has been very successful as a coach for East Bengal Club. During his second stint as coach, East Bengal had won multitude trophies including back to back National Football League titles in 2002–03 and 2003–04, Kolkata Football League, Durand Cup and IFA Shield. East Bengal won LG ASEAN Club Cup in 2003 under his coaching.
