Four-time champion Germany were knocked out of the World Cup despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in its last Group E match on Thursday.
Germany finished third in the standings, behind Spain on goal difference, with Japan top following its 2-1 win over the Spaniards.
For Germany, Serge Gnabry in 9′, Kai Havertz in 72′, Kai Havertz in 84′ and Niclas Füllkrug in 88′ scored the goals. For Costa Rica, Yeltsin Tejeda scored one in 57′ while Manuel Neuer scored an OG in 60′.
Germany appeared in 20 of the 22 FIFA World Cup (missing 1930 & 1950) & only on three occasions did not reach the knockouts (in 1938, 2018, 2022). Since winning the title in 2014, has not qualified for knock out stage in 2018 & now in 2022. They won 2, lost 3, & drawn 1.
