Nigeria U17 pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, beating the United States of America U17 4-3 on penalties in the quarterfinals at the D. Y. Patil Stadium. It was a historic win as the Flamingoes qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in their history. In regulation time, Edafe in 26′ gave Nigeria U17 the lead while Villarreal in 40′ equalized for USA U17.
Germany U17 joined Nigeria U17 in the semi-final as they defeated Brazil U17 2-0 in the same venue. Marie Steiner in 23′ and Melina Kruger in injury time scored the goals for Germany U17.
Meanwhile Colombia U17 defeated nine-member Tanzania U17 3-0 in the third quarterfinals in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Margoa. For the girls in yellow, Caicedo 3’, Munoz 16’, Rodriguez 36’ scored the goals. For then, its dream redemption in the tournament – following four successive group stage exits. They had finished as runner-up in the U-17 CONMEBOL Championship and now has already had its best run in the tournament, making it past the group stage.
Defending Champion Spain U17 defeated Japan U17 2-1 in the last quarterfinals to seal semi-final spot at Pandit Jawaharlal Stadium in Margao, Goa. Two late goals by Vicky Lopez of Spain spoiled Japan U17’s party. Tanikawa in 66′ gave Japan U17 the lead, while Vicky Lopez scored twice in 87′ and in injury time to take her team to the last four.
