Nigeria U17 defeated Germany U17 3-2 on penalties to finish third in the 2022 U17 Women’s FIFA World Cup, at the D. Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
Germans are always famous for their comeback and they did the same in third place playoff match also. Three goals from Nigeria U17’s Ajakaye Opeyemi (20′), Amina Bello (48′) and Edidiong Etim (63′) looked to have sealed the fate of the match, Germany U17 scripted an amazing comeback – with two quickfire goals in the last four minutes of regulation time – to force the match into penalties. For Germany U17 Veit 73’, Bartz 84’, Bender 90’ scored the goals.
The score was 3-3 at the end of regulation time.
Germany U17, despite scoring the highest number of goals in the tournament (15) – ended fourth – its best-ever performance in the tournament since 2012. Earlier, in 2008 they finished third and in 2012 finished at fourth place.
