Portugal defeated Austria 1-0 to lift maiden FIFA U17 World Cup title at the Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar on Thursday.
Anisio Cabral scored the only goal of the match in 32′ of the match. This was Anisio’s seventh goal of the tournament.
This was the first time since 2003, that Portugal qualified for the FIFA U17 World Cup. Their earlier best finish was fourth place which they achieved in 1989.
Earlier, in this year, Portugal won their seventh UEFA European U17 Championship at Albania.
Placed in Group B, Portugal defeated New Caledonia 6-1, Morocco 6-0 while lost to Japan 2-1, in Round of 32 they defeated Belgium 2-1, defeated Mexico 5-0 in Round of 16, Switzerland 2-0 in Quarterfinal, Brazil 6-5 (PS) in semifinal.
Portugal’s Mateus Mide, who had four goals and two assists, was awarded the Golden Ball award in recognition of being the best player in the tournament.
Austria’s Johannes Moser who scored eight goal in the tournament won the golden boot award.
Earlier, in third place playoff, Italy defeated Brazil 4-2 in a shootout after a 0-0 draw in regulation time.
Nigeria still hold the record of winning the FIFA U17 World Cup five times, followed by Brazil four times, Ghana & Mexico two times each, while Germany, France, Soviet Union, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland and England won once each.
