Alejandro Menendez Garcia, a heartthrob of East Bengal fans, who almost gave the Red & Gold fans the desired I-League is now coaching in lower division Spanish side Albacete Balompie.
However, he still remembered his years with East Bengal and relish the beautiful moments of Kolkata. Hence when Manuel Manolo Diaz got the offer of SC East Bengal, Alejandro Menendez Garcia convinced him to take the charge. Manolo Diaz had several offers around the world including one from China. But Alejandro pushed him for the East Bengal job by telling him that Kolkata has an unmatched football tradition and the football crazy atmosphere which would make him feel alive every moment. That is when Manolo decided to say yes to East Bengal’s offer.
Manolo and Alejandro were quite known to each other since their Real Madrid days. Manolo was coach of various age groups of Real Madrid. On the other hand, Alejandro was in charge of Real Madrid Castilla (reserve team) back in 2009. During that period they came to know each other and became good friends.
