Vietnam booked a place in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time after defeating Chinese Taipei 2-1 in their playoff tie at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.
Chinese Taipei will now join Thailand in the Inter-Confederation Playoff where a win will take them into FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Chinese Taipei needed a draw only as they defeated Thailand 3-0 on Friday, whereas Vietnam defeated the same opponent 2-0 in their encounter on Wednesday. That played a part in Vietnam’s aggressive start as they immediately dominated possession, forcing Chinese Taipei to defend deep.
Chuong Thi Kieu gave Vietnam the lead in 7’. Su Hy-Ysuan equalized for Chinese Taipei in 50’ while Thi Bich Thuy scored the winner for Vietnam in 56’ to confirm their berth at Australia/New Zealand 2023.
