Australia proved far too strong for an inexperienced Indonesia, rolling to a 18-0 win in their opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 Group B match at Mumbai Football Arena on Friday.
Indonesia side making their first finals appearance since 1989, eager to impress their generation, put up a brave defensive display in the early minutes, but their resistance was broken in ninth minute of the match. It was a game of virtually continuous goals by the Australians.
It was their biggest-ever score in an Asian competition, but it fell just two goals short of their historic record of 21-0, recorded against American Samoa in 1998.
For Australia S. Kerr scored six (9’11’26’36’54’61’), E. van Egmond scored four (39’57’59’69’), H. Raso (24’88’), E. Carpenter (34’49’) and K. Simon (68’71’) scored two goals each while C. Foord (14’), A. Luik (79’) scored a goal each.
Australia will face Philippines in their Group B campaign on Monday, while Indonesia will face Thailand.
