Australia proved far too strong for an inexperienced Indonesia, rolling to a 18-0 win in their opening AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 Group B match at Mumbai Football Arena on Friday.

Indonesia side making their first finals appearance since 1989, eager to impress their generation, put up a brave defensive display in the early minutes, but their resistance was broken in ninth minute of the match. It was a game of virtually continuous goals by the Australians.

It was their biggest-ever score in an Asian competition, but it fell just two goals short of their historic record of 21-0, recorded against American Samoa in 1998.

For Australia S. Kerr scored six (9‎’‎11‎’‎26‎’‎36‎’‎54‎’‎61‎’‎), E. van Egmond scored four (39‎’‎57‎’‎59‎’‎69‎’), H. Raso (24‎’‎88‎’), E. Carpenter (34‎’‎49‎’) and K. Simon ‎‎(68‎’‎71‎’) scored two goals each while C. Foord (14‎’‎), A. Luik (‎‎79‎’) scored a goal each.

Australia will face Philippines in their Group B campaign on Monday, while Indonesia will face Thailand.
