In 1973 IFA Shield, East Bengal was clubbed with Trenganu of Malaysia in the Group League. On 13th September, East Bengal was scheduled to play against Trenganu. East Bengal comfortably defeated the Malaysian side by 3-0. Habib Akbar scored two goals while one goal was scored by Subhash Bhowmick. East Bengal Went on to win the IFA Shield for 11th time defeating Pyongyang City Club by 3-1.
