East Bengal FC Women have strengthened their squad ahead of their upcoming AFC Women’s Champions League group-stage campaign with the signing of Japanese defender Hitomi Tanaka, marking a historic moment in Indian women’s football.
Tanaka becomes the first-ever Japanese female footballer to join an Indian football club, bringing valuable international experience to the East Bengal squad as the club prepares for its continental challenge.
The Japanese defender most recently featured for Dutch Eredivisie Vrouwen side Hera United Women. Prior to her move to the Netherlands, Tanaka spent six years playing in Spain, representing several clubs including CD Alba FF, Córdoba CF, CD Santa Teresa, Cacereño Femenino, SE AEM and Sporting Club de Huelva.
Her experience across the Spanish and Dutch leagues adds an international dimension to Moshal Girls’ defensive unit and could prove valuable as the Red & Gold prepare to compete against some of Asia’s leading women’s football clubs.
Speaking after completing her move, Tanaka expressed her excitement at joining the historic Kolkata club and representing East Bengal on the continental stage.

With the AFC Women’s Champions League group stage approaching, East Bengal will be hoping that Tanaka’s European experience, defensive qualities and international exposure can contribute to a strong campaign on the biggest continental stage.
