The Philippines advanced to their first ever AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2022 semi-finals, defeating Chinese Taipei 4-3 on penalties after their quarter-final ended 1-1 in extra time on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel made two saves and score one in the shootout, as the Philippines not only booked an inaugural appearance in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup semi-finals but also a berth in the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time. They play Korea Republic in the India 2022 semi-finals on Thursday.
In regulation time, Q. Quezada in 49’ scored for Philippines while Zhuo Li-Ping in 82’ equalized for Chinese Taipei.
Chinese Taipei’s FIFA Women’s World Cup hopes, meanwhile, are still alive as they will play against Vietnam and Thailand in the three-team playoffs, with the top side at the end of the round robin competition to advance to the Finals and the remaining two to feature in the Inter-Confederation playoffs.
