In 1979 IFA Shield Semifinal East Bengal defeated South Korea XI by 5-4 in the tri-breaker. On 11th September in an exciting match both the teams were locked at 1-1 in the regulation time and in the extra time. Then in the penalty-shootout, East Bengal won by 5-4. In the regulation time Surajit Sengupta scored East Bengal’s goal. However East Bengal lost the final to arch rivals.
