In the year 1997 in Asian Cup Winners Cup in the Second Round, East Bengal played their home match against Verdy Kawasaki of Japan. On 8th November, East Bengal won the match by 1-0. Omelo scored the winning goal for East Bengal. This victory is counted as one of the biggest achievement for the Club. Verdy Kawasaki at that time was one of the strongest J-League team. They had also won the AFC club Championship. So victory against such a club gave the fans a great satisfaction.
